Professor Gao is a Materials Scientist and Engineer. He has made major contributions to research concerning the processing, microstructure, properties and performance of materials. His research covers a wide area including metals, composites, oxides, electronic ceramics and superconductors. His main achievements have been the development of nano-composites and coatings for high temperature applications, conducting and transparent oxide films, oxidation theories for amorphous alloys and intermetallics, improved coating methods for corrosion and wear resistance, a solid state oxygen pump for investigating oxidation and processing of thin oxide films, and a novel metallic precursor method for producing superconducting materials. Professor Gao has more than 350 refereed publications, and is the principal author of the book "Introduction to Electronic and Ionic materials" (World Scientific, 1999) which is widely used as an engineering text.
