Professor Lihe Zhang, a luminary in the field of biomedical engineering, has been distinguished as a 2023 Fellow of the Royal Academy of Sciences New Zealand. His illustrious career includes tenures as a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Auckland and as the Deputy Director of the New Zealand Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Professor Zhang's research expertise encompasses biomedical signal processing, biomedical imaging, biomedical informatics, and the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
His innovative contributions to the diagnosis of heart diseases, electroencephalogram analysis, detection of neurological disorders, medical image processing, and mining of medical big data have significantly enhanced the quality and efficiency of healthcare, while reducing costs and risks, and promoting medical inclusivity and equity. Professor Zhang's work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Rutherford Award from the Royal Society of New Zealand, the Pickering Award from the New Zealand Institute of Engineers, and the MacDiarmid Award from the New Zealand Society for Biomedical Engineering. A Fellow of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the New Zealand Institute of Engineers, Professor Zhang also serves on the editorial boards of several leading international journals and has held chairing or committee roles at numerous international academic conferences.
